Yahoo's New CEO Marissa Mayer REMAKING Yahoo as an Internet Portal
Yahoo - one of the most popular sites not only in United States, but all over the world. It is widely known for its web portal, search engine Yahoo! Search and other services as Yahoo! Directory, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Groups, Yahoo! Answers, advertising, online mapping, video sharing, fantasy sports and its social media website. Roughly 700 million people visit Yahoo! websites every month and attracts "more than half a billion consumers every month in more than 30 languages.
Remaking it as an Internet Portal
Last year, the famously detail-oriented EX-Googler Marissa Mayer took the position as the new CEO of Yahoo!. Mayer cleared that she will "broadening not narrowing", Yahoo's scope, cementing its once passe reputation as the original internet "portal".
A week earlier, Yahoo announced to pay $1.1billion for microblog network Tumblr. Buying Tumblr will gives the company potential valuable data on attracting young or youngsters users, particularly between the age of 15-25 years old. Tumblr attracts 900 posts per second and 24 billion minutes of viewing time each month, and more than half of Tumblr's members use the mobile app, averaging 7 sessions per day. But other people are asking "Can Yahoo avoid screwing up Tumblr like they do in GeoCities and Flickr?"
To make it clear, Marissa Mayer promised "not to screw it up", and Yahoo will operate the company independently and the Tumblr's CEO will still remain. She also said that "Tumblr be Tumblr" and Yahoo will let it and allow to run as a separate company.
Yahoo keeps widening and expanding into some new areas. From search engine, to movie listing and stock quotes and photos-sharing and news hub.
Two-months ago, the company paid a reported amount of $30 million to buy news digest apps Summly from a British teenager. Even though technology advances today have made it cheaper and easier than ever for software companies and web services to go it alone.
The stock currently trades at around $26 a share, with Yahoo! stock having climbed nearly 34% so far this year.
Yahoo is making every possible ways to become "cool" and "impressive" again. Not to let their users be disappointed.
Because Mayer once told a reporter, "I've always liked simplicity".
So, let's all just wait, and let's see what will be the "NEW" on Yahoo.
